Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell 19-1 to No. 6 UC Irvine and 11-6 to No. 11 UC San Diego on the second day of the Convergence Tournament at Haldeman Pool.
With the losses the Sagehens fall to 9-7 on the year and 1-3 at its host tournament, with all three losses coming to teams ranked in the top 12 (Pomona-Pitzer fell yesterday 16-6 to No. 12 Long Beach State).
Junior Alyssa Woodward accounted for Pomona-Pitzer's lone goal in the first game on a 5-meter shot (goal pictured) and added three goals against UC San Diego. Junior Sarah Westcott added two goals against the Tritons, while freshman Christina Williamson added one.
Woodward's second goal had the Sagehens within 5-3 midway though the second quarter, but UC San Diego scored the final two goals of the half and the first two goals of the second half to build its lead up to 9-3. Woodward stopped the run with 10 seconds left in the third quarter, and Westcott and Williamson found the net early in the fourth to cut the lead to 9-6 with 5:33 still left to play.
However, the Tritons answered back on their next possession on a goal from Julia Kirkland and were able to hold on for the 11-6 win. Kirkland was one of four UC San Diego players to finish with two goals. Ahsha Earwood had eight saves for the Sagehens, while Courtney Miller had seven for the Tritons.
Annika Nelson had nine saves for UC Irvine and allowed just the one goal on the penalty shot. Amber Stewart and Destene Albers had three goals apiece for the Anteaters.
