Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team received four goals from Sarah Westcott as it held off Cal Lutheran in a defensive battle for an 8-5 win on Wednesday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.
With the win, the Sagehens are now 15-12 on the year and 2-0 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran falls to 5-17 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The score was just 1-1 after the first quarter and 3-3 at the half, but then outscored the Regals 4-1 in the third quarter to take control. Hope Grant started the second half with a 6-on-5 goal, and Mahalia Prater-Fahey and Westcott followed with transition goals to make it 6-3. After Cal Lutheran scored on a penalty shot with 22 seconds left, Westcott answered with just five seconds left to make it 7-4 heading into the fourth.
The Regals closed within 7-5, but the Sagehens were able to hold from there and Westcott tacked on one final goal in the closing seconds to make the final score 8-5.
Christina Williamson (pictured) added two goals for Pomona-Pitzer in the first half, keeping the offense afloat until Westcott was able to lead the charge with three in the second. The Sagehen defense kept Cal Lutheran away from goal with pressure all over the pool, as junior Sallie Walecka needed to make only five saves.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action again this weekend for a home match with Occidental, beginning at 11 a.m.
