Claremont, Calif. - Alyssa Woodward (pictured) scored five goals, but it wasn't quite enough as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell 11-10 to Brown on Tuesday evening at Haldeman Pool.
With the loss, the Sagehens slip to 14-12 on the season, while Brown improves to 9-10 overall with the win.
Woodward scored twice in a 4-0 run in the first quarter to give the Sagehens a 4-1 lead, and then beat the buzzer at the half to break a 6-6 tie and give Pomona-Pitzer a 7-6 lead at the break. After Sarah Presant and Kate Woods scored for Brown in the third quarter to give the Bears their first lead since 1-0, Woodward tied it up again with her fifth goal of the game with 5:03 left in the second.
Woods gave Brown a 9-8 lead after three quarters, but Mahalia Prater-Fahey connected from around the five-meter line to tie it up again at 9-9 with 5:15 to go. Liz Rosen gave the lead back to the Bears, and Shannon Crowley stretched it to 11-9 with 3:30 left when she shoveled a rebound off the crossbar into an empty net.
Christina Williamson gave the Sagehens some hope when she connected from long range with 1:18 left to make the score 11-10, and the Pomona-Pitzer defense was able to get a steal. However, Brown was able to deflect a Sagehen pass outside the five-meter line and come away with the steal, before killing the rest of the clock to preserve the win.
Woods and Rosen each had three goals to lead the Brown offense, while Prater-Fahey had two to support the game-high five from Woodward. Sallie Walecka had nine saves for the Sagehens in net.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow for a 5 p.m. game against Cal Lutheran.
