Redlands, Calif. - Mae Coyiuto was part of the only doubles win for the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team and provided the clinching point in singles as the Sagehens defeated Redlands 5-4 on Friday afternoon in a road SCIAC match.
With the win, No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer improves to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC, while No. 13 Redlands falls to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead after doubles, with Coyiuto and senior Arthi Padmanabhan took an 8-6 decision at No. 3 to salvage one point for the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer, though, came out much stronger in singles, taking three two-setters to take a 4-3 lead.
Sophomore Lea Lynn Yen was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 3, sophomore Marie Fleming, returning from an injury after missing three weeks, showed little signs of rust with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4, and Padmanbhan closed strong for a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5.
However, Redlands was able to tie the match at 4-4 with a three-set win at No. 6 with Andrea Villanueva bouncing back from Rosemary Pelch shutting her out 6-0 in the second set to win the third 6-2. That brought the match down to No. 2 singles, where Coyiuto won the first set 6-3, and Natalie Etchegaray won the second 6-4. The two players were deadlocked 5-5 in the third, and Coyiuto was able to win the final two games to seal it.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow at home for a 2 p.m. match against No. 6 Middlebury.
