Rosenbaum (8-8, 10 RBI) Carries Sagehens To Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Redlands, Calif. - Sophomore first baseman Simon Rosenbaum (pictured) was 3-for-3 with eight RBI in the opening game and 5-for-5 with two RBI in the nightcap as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Redlands 11-7 and 14-4 (eight innings) on Sunday afternoon.

With the sweep, the Sagehens improve to 5-8 overall on the year and 4-4 in the SCIAC, while Redlands falls to 4-9 overall and 4-4 in league play.

Rosenbaum had a homer, three doubles, a walk, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly on his way to an 8-for-8, 10-RBI doubleheader. He also hit a grand slam in his only game at Redlands as a freshman last year, making him 11-for-13 with 15 RBI in three career games at Redlands (and 16-for-21 with 16 RBI in five games against the Bulldogs overall).

In the opener, Rosenbaum had a two-run double in the first inning after shortstop Sam Fox and left fielder Coleman Lukas drew walks to start the game. He then stepped to the plate in the second inning with the bases loaded and two outs and cleared the bases with a three-run double, stretching the lead to 6-0.

Rosenbaum added a sacrifice fly in the fourth for his sixth RBI of the day, and then added a two-run homer in the seventh, making the score 10-3. Redlands scored four runs in the seventh to close within 10-7, but the Sagehens added an insurance run in the eighth and sophomore closer Kevin Kannappan shut the door on the Bulldogs in the eighth and ninth in relief of starter Jake Bruml, who earned the win.

Fox and Lukas were both 1-for-3 with three runs scored in front of Rosenbaum, while center fielder Kevin Brice was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

In the nightcap, senior third baseman Travis Bowers had a two-out RBI single with the bases loaded in the first and added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to help stake Pomona-Pitzer to a 4-0 lead. Redlands scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to close within one run, but the Sagehens came right back with three in he top of the sixth. Freshman second baseman Tanner Nishioka had a two-out RBI single and Rosenbaum followed with an RBI single for his sixth hit and ninth RBI of the twinbill. Bruml added an RBI double to make the score 7-3.

Rosenbaum led off the top of the eighth with a double to start a seven-run inning, and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Jordan. Kevin Brice then followed with an RBI single with the bases loaded and Fox was hit by a pitch to bring home another RBI. Nishioka cleared the bases with a three-run triple, and Rosenbaum capped off his perfect day with an RBI single, his tenth run driven in of the doubleheader.

Rosenbaum's final two line scores were 3-2-3-8 and 5-3-5-2 as he accounted for 14 of Pomona-Pitzer's 25 runs with either a run scored or an RBI. He led off innings three times in the nightcap, preventing him from potentially adding to his RBI total.

Freshman pitcher Lane Miles threw seven strong innings for the Sagehens as he improved to 2-1 on the year (with his loss a 3-0 defeat to Cal Lutheran). Nishioka was 2-for-6 with four RBI in the nightcap, while Fox was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Brice was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The two teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow with a game at Pomona-Pitzer, beginning at 2:30 p.m., which was rescheduled after Friday was rained out.
