Amherst Rallies In Singles For 6-3 Win Over Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team (ranked No. 12 in the nation) took a 2-1 lead after doubles, but No. 4 Amherst regrouped in singles to capture a 6-3 win over the Sagehens on Monday afternoon at Pauley Tennis Complex.

With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 6-3 on the year with all three losses coming to teams ranked in the top 10 (Pomona-Pitzer also defeated two top 10 teams in the last week - knocking off No. 8 Carnegie Mellon on Thursday and No. 7 Bowdoin yesterday). Amherst improves to 2-1 on the year with the win.

The freshman doubles teams of Rosemary Pelch (pictured serving) and Maddie Gordon (foreground) earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while senior Arthi Padmanabhan and sophomore Mae Coyiuto picked up an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles to give the Sagehens the 2-1 advantage.

However, sophomore Lea Lynn Yen was the lone singles winner for Pomona-Pitzer, picking up a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3. Coyiuto won a first set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles 7-2, but Gabby Devlin came back to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-2. Gordon forced a third set at No. 6 singles with a 6-4 win in the second, but Sarah Monteagudo took the third set 6-2.

Pomona-Pitzer will return to action on Friday for a SCIAC match at Redlands at 2 p.m.
