Patience Proves Virtuous As Sagehens Rally Past Wesleyan

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team scored six runs in the seventh, four on bases loaded walks, to come from behind and capture a 6-4 win over Wesleyan on Monday afternoon at Alumni Field.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-14 on the season with their second straight close win. Wesleyan sees its record fall to 5-4 with the loss.

The game was a duel between starting pitchers Mark Okuma (pictured) for the Sagehens and Peter Rantz for the Cardinals, who exchanged zeroes through the first five innings. Neither team was able to get a baserunner past first in the first three innings, but both teams threatened in the fourth, with Okuma getting a key caught stealing on a pickoff move as Donnie Cimino tried to steal third, and Cimino throwing out a runner at the plate on a would-be two-out RBI single from Coleman Lukas.

Wesleyan broke through with two runs in the sixth inning on a squeeze bunt from Ellis Schaefer and an RBI infield single from Jonathan Dennett. The Cardinals added two more in the second on an RBI single from Andrew Yin and a two-out error to push the lead to 4-0.

The Sagehens were able to respond, though, with the bottom of the order setting the table. Senior left fielder Coleman Lukas singled through the left side, junior second baseman Kenny Rabin reached on a misplayed fly ball to right and sophomore center fielder Kevin Brice singled to load the bases with nobody out and bring the top of the order up.

Freshman shortstop Tanner Nishioka drew a bases loaded walk for the first run, and after the Cardinals missed a forceout at the plate with a wild throw, sophomore first baseman Simon Rosenbaum walked on four pitches to make the score 4-3.  After a forceout at the plate, junior designated hitter Timmy Novom and junior first baseman Jake Bruml each drew walks on 3-2 pitches to give the Sagehens the lead. Rabin capped off the inning with a line drive single to make it 6-4.

From there, the bullpen did the job in efficient fashion, as senior Drew Helgren worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning and sophomore Kevin Kannappan did the same in the ninth, ending the game on a strikeout for his fifth save of the year.

Lukas and Brice were each 2-for-4 for the Sagehens, while six Wesleyan hitters accounted for the Cardinals six hits. Sophomore Jake Dorfman got the win in relief, while Okuma did not allow an earned run in 5.2 innings to get a no decision.

Pomona-Pitzer will have nine days off for Spring Break before returning to action on Wednesday, Match 26 for a 3 p.m. home game against Pacific Lutheran.
