Big Second Inning Helps Sagehens Salvage Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Orange, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer scored nine runs in the second inning (all with two outs) and held on for a 10-8 win over Chapman to salvage a split in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

With the split, Pomona-Pitzer moves to 7-14 on the season and 5-10 in league play. Chapman moves to 12-8 overall and 10-5 in the league.

Chapman won the opening game of the doubleheader 7-6 after rallying for two runs in the eighth after having two out and nobody on, with Mark Saatzer providing the two-run single. The Sagehens went ahead 6-5 with four runs in the top of the eighth, capped off by a three-run homer from junior right fielder Timmy Novom (pictured), who hit a three-run shot for his second game in a row.

The Panthers also won yesterday's game at Pomona-Pitzer 11-10 with a three-run eighth inning, giving it two comeback wins in the first two games of the series. After Pomona-Pitzer went ahead 9-1 with nine runs in the second in the nightcap. Chapman came all the way back to 10-8 in the ninth and had two runners on with one out, but junior third baseman E.J. Lopez fielded a grounder at third, touched the bag and threw on to first to end the game.

The Sagehens sent 15 runners to the plate in the second, as junior first baseman Jake Bruml led off with a double and freshman catcher Kevin Jordan drew a one-out walk. Pomona-Pitzer then had 10 straight players reach base, including freshman shortstop Tanner Nishioka twice, who singled to load the bases his first time up and had an infield single to drive home the final run of the frame.

After Nishioka's first single, senior second baseman Travis Bowers walked to force home the tying run, and junior right fielder Simon Rosenbaum hit a two-run single to make the score 3-1. Lopez then followed with a single, and after a pitching change, Novom drew a walk to load the bases. After a wild pitch scored a run, Bruml walked and senior left fielder Jackson Badger singled to drive home a run. Jordan then walked to make the score 7-1, and sophomore center fielder Kevin Brice and Nishioka hit back to back infield singles to push nine across before Chapman finally ended the inning on a flyout.

The Panthers scored once in the third, three in the fifth and once in the sixth to pull within 9-6, before Rosenbaum hit a solo shot in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 10-6. Chapman got that run back in the bottom half and then had the bases loaded in the eighth before Coleman Lukas was able to get a key strikeout and a groundout to shortstop to keep the score 10-7.

Three singles in the ninth made the score 10-8 and brought the winning run to the plate, but sophomore Kevin Kannappan earned a save by getting the inning-ending double play.

Rosenbaum was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the nightcap and batting 2-for-4 in the opener. Five other Sagehens had two hits in the nightcap (Nishioka, Lopez, Novom, Bruml and Brice). Nishioka was 2-for-3 in the opener, and Lopez was 2-for-4.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Monday for an 11 a.m. non-league game against Wesleyan, before a nine-day break.
