Greencastle, Ind. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team held a 2-1 lead after doubles, but Johns Hopkins responded for a 6-3 win in the semifinals of the ITA Indoor Nationals on Saturday at DePauw University.
With the loss, the Sagehens, who are ranked No. 10 nationally and seeded fourth at the ITA Indoors, fall to 2-1 on the year, while No. 7 Johns Hopkins, the tournament's top seed, improves to 2-0.
Senior Sammy Chao and sophomore Lea Lynn Yen provided the swing point in doubles with a 9-8 win at No. 1 (7-3 in the tiebreaker), while the freshman team of Rosemary Pelch and Maddie Gordon added an 8-5 win at No. 2.
Sophomore Mae Coyiuto provided the lone singles win for Pomona-Pitzer at No. 2, bouncing back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to win a tiebreaker 7-5 in the second set and then taking the third 6-3. That leveled the match at 3-3, but the Blue Jays won at No. 4-6 in the second half of the singles competition to take the win.
Pomona-Pitzer will be in action tomorrow in the third-place match against No. 8 Univerity of Chicago, beginning at 10 a.m.
