Sagehens Edge Redlands At ITA Indoors

Greencastle, Ind. - Freshman Rosemary Pelch provided the clinching point at No. 5 singles as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team defeated Redlands 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Nationals on Friday at DePauw University.

Fourth-seeded Pomona-Pitzer, which is ranked No. 10 nationally improves to 2-0 on the young season and will move on to meet top-seeded Johns Hopkins on Saturday morning in the semifinals. Redlands, which is ranked No. 11 nationally, will face UC Santa Cruz in the consolation bracket.

The Sagehens trailed 2-1 after doubles, but bounced back to take four of six singles matches to get the win. Mae Coyiuto leveled the match at 2-2 with a quick 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2, after teaming with senior Arthi Padmanabhan for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. After Jessica Ly won at No. 1 singles for a 3-2 Redlands lead, sophomore Lea Lynn Yen earned a victory at No. 3 to tie it back up 3-3.

Padmanabhan then provided the fourth point for the Sagehens with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 and Pelch was able to finish off the victory with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5.

Top-seeded Johns Hopkins, ranked No. 7 nationally, took a 9-0 win over UC Santa Cruz in its quarterfinal on Friday.
