Riverside, Calif. - Alyssa Woodward scored nine goals in two games, including the eventual game-winner in overtime of the nightcap, as Pomona-Pitzer picked up two wins at the Cal Baptist Lancer Invite on Saturday.
The Sagehens defeated Fresno Pacific 10-6 in its first match of the day in the morning, and then defeated Redlands 9-8 in overtime in the evening match, improving to 6-2 on the year, with four of the wins coming by one goal (including two against Redlands).
Redlands held a 6-3 lead midway through the third quarter, but Woodward scored back-to-back goals to cut it to 6-5 and freshman Chessa Burke tallied one with 25 seconds left in the third stanza to level the score at 6-6.
Junior Sarah Westcott stretched the run to 4-0 as she gave the Sagehens a 7-6 lead with 3:46 left in regulation, but Taylor Christie answered right back to tie it up at 7-7 on the next possession and neither team could score down the stretch.
Freshman Hope Grant scored in the first overtime to put the Sagehens ahead 8-7, and Woodward scored her fourth in the second overtime to make it 9-7. Redlands got back to 9-8 on a Deandra VanHouten with 1:58 to go, but freshman goalie Ahsha Earwood made her 10th save to keep the score 9-8 as Pomona-Pitzer was able to hold on.
In the first game, the Sagehens led 7-3 in the second half and had to withstand a 3-0 Fresno Pacific run as the Sunbirds closed to within 7-6 with 5:05 left to play. Woodward, though, stepped up with back-to-back goals at the 4:42 and 3:36 marks and Westcott tacked on an insurance goal to seal it.
Westcott and junior Chrissie Alving-Trinh had two goals apiece for Pomona-Pitzer in the Fresno Pacific win, while sophomore Megan Snow had one. Westcott added two more against Redlands, while Alving-Trinh joined Grant and Burke with a goal apiece.
The Sagehens have two weeks off before returning to action with four matches at the Cal Lutheran Posada Royale Invitational on Feb. 28 and March 1.
