Sagehens Earn Split, Take Weekend Series From CMS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Claremont, Calif. - Lane Miles threw seven strong innings in his first collegiate start as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team took the second of two games from CMS 5-3 on Saturday at Alumni Field.

CMS won the opening game 11-7 in 10 innings, but the Sagehens earned the series win two games to one after taking the opener 4-3 at CMS yesterday. With the split, Pomona-Pitzer is now 3-4 on the year and 2-1 in the SCIAC, while CMS falls to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Miles began the game with a walk and a two-run homer to Jack Witte to fall behind 2-0 before recording an out, but settled in after that and did not allow another run in his seven innings of work, leaving the game with a 4-2 lead. CMS got one of the runs back in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly, but an RBI single from junior third baseman E.J. Lopez stretched it back to 5-3.

Sophomore closer Kevin Kannappan then worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his second save of the weekend after getting a two-inning save yesterday.

Freshman Tanner Nishioka (pictured) homered in both games of the doubleheader for the Sagehens, while hitting 5-for-10. After the Sagehens fell behind 2-0 on the Witte homer, senior catcher Jackson Badger homered in the second, and Nishioka homered in the third to tie the game up 2-2. Badger then doubled and came around to score in the fourth to make the score 3-2, where the score stayed until the bottom of the seventh, when junior right fielder Timmy Novom chopped an RBI single in the 3-4 hole.

In the opening game, Nishioka and junior first baseman Jake Bruml both homered in the bottom of the fifth to give Pomona-Pitzer a 3-2 lead, but CMS scored once in the sixth and four times in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead, as Michael Erb's two-run single broke a 3-3 tie.

The Sagehens chipped away, though, as Lopez had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and Bruml added a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-5. A double from senior catcher Travis Bowers scored a run in the eighth, and he came home on an RBI groundout from sophomore outfielder Sean McCoy to tie it 7-7.

Pomona-Pitzer had a chance in the ninth inning as Lopez started the inning off with a single and went to second when Samuel Woodman made a diving catch in foul territory off the bat of Bruml. After an international walk to Simon Rosenbaum, the Sagehens loaded the bases with two outs and brought Badger in as a pinch hitter, but he hit a sharp grounder right to Witte at second base.

Erb then broke the tie for the second time in the 10th with an RBI single, and Ray Hurwitz followed with a two-run double to push the lead to 10-7. Evan Opperman added an insurance run on an RBI single.

Lopez was 3-for-6 in the opening game, while Nishioka was 2-for-5 and Bowers was 2-for-4. Nishioka was 3-for-5 in game two, while Badger was 2-for-3, Rosenbaum was 2-for-4 and Lopez was 2-for-5. Lopez had multiple hits in all three games of the series, going 3-for-4 yesterday, 3-for-6 in game one today, and 3-for-5 in the nightcap.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action next weekend for a three-game series with Cal Lutheran, including a home game on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and a road doubleheader in Thousand Oaks on Saturday.
