Riverside, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team earned an opening day split by defeating Concordia (Irvine) 11-10 on Saturday in its second of two matches at the Cal Baptist Invite.
Junior attacker Alyssa Woodward scored the game-winner with 2:35 left, as the Sagehens bounced back from an 18-5 loss to No. 15 Cal State Northridge in their first game of the day to open out the season 1-1.
In the Concordia match, Pomona-Pitzer trailed 8-7 entering the fourth quarter, but juniors Sallie Walecka and Chrissie Alving-Trinh scored two straight goals to put the Sagehens ahead 9-8 with 4:54 left to play. After Eagles' attacker Jaimie Breen tied it, freshman Hope Grant scored with 4:15 to go to put Pomona-Pitzer ahead 10-9.
Once again, Breen tied the score, but this time, Woodward was able to put the Sagehens ahead to stay with her first goal of the match with 2:36 left on the clock. Pomona-Pitzer was able to draw two ejections in the final two minutes to help kill off the rest of the clock.
Grant led the way for the Sagehens with three goals, while Alving-Trinh and junior Sarah Westcott each had two. Breen and Tayla Walsh each had three goals for Concordia in the loss.
In the first game of the day, the Sagehens fell 18-5 to No. 15 Cal State Northridge. The Matadors led 5-0 after the first quarter and stretched the lead to 9-0 before Pomona-Pitzer broke the ice on a Woodward goal. Woodward finished with two goals, while Grant, Alving-Trinh and sophomore Megan Snow each had one. Marisa Young had three goals for Northridge, while five other players had two.
The Sagehens will be back in action next weekend at Whittier to take on Cal State San Bernardino and Redlands on Saturday.
