Pasadena, Calif. - Sophomore Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) and Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif. - pictured) each had five goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team coasted to an 18-7 win over Chapman in the quarterfinals of the SCIAC Tournament on Friday, hosted by Caltech.
The win improves the defending champion Sagehens to 16-16 overall on the season and 7-2 in conference play, and they will advance to tomorrow's semifinals against sixth-seeded Occidental, which upset third-seeded Whittier 9-4.
Senior goalie Sarah Tuggy (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 16 saves to lead the defense, which did not allow a goal in the second half after Pomona-Pitzer took a 13-7 lead into the break after a very high scoring opening stanza.
The Sagehens never trailed, as sophomore Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) had three goals in the first four minutes to give Pomona-Pitzer a 4-2 lead. After Chapman closed to within 4-3 with 3:32 left in the first quarter, Woodward, Prater-Fahey and sophomore Sallie Walecka (Palo Alto, Calif.) scored three goals 1:21 apart to make the score 7-3 after the first stanza.
Prater-Fahey stretched the run to 4-0 with the first goal of the second quarter, and freshman Katy Schaefer (Los Altos, Calif.) closed out the first half with her second goal with 15 seconds left to make the score 13-7 at the break.
Prater-Fahey, Walecka and Woodward scored goals in the third quarter for the Sagehens, while Woodward and sophomore Carter Grant (Carpinteria, Calif.) added goals in the fourth. All 18 goals for the Sagehens were scored by freshmen and sophomores.
Pomona-Pitzer has defeated Occidental twice this season in two close games, 8-5 in a non-league match on March 2 at La Verne's tournament and 9-7 in a road SCIAC match on March 30
