Claremont, Calif. - The No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team took a 2-1 lead after doubles and won the first four completed singles matches to earn a 6-3 win over No. 9 Redlands on Friday at Pauley Courts.
Senior Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif. - pictured) won 6-4, 7-6 at No. 1 singles to get a win in her final match at home, as Pomona-Pitzer improves to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in the SCIAC. Redlands slips to 17-2 overall and 6-2 in the SCIAC with the loss.
The win secured the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament, which will be held on May 3-4 at La Verne, while also solidifying Pomona-Pitzer's resume for a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament if it doesn't win the SCIAC's automatic bid.
Senior Kara Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) also earned a win in her final match at Pauley Courts, teaming with junior Sammy Chao (Taipei, Taiwan) for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Junior Arthi Padmanabhan (Saratoga, Calif.) and freshman Lea Lynn Yen (Fullerton, Calif.) won the rubber match in doubles 8-5 at No. 3 to give Pomona-Pitzer a 2-1 lead heading into singles and then both dominated their singles matches.
Yen won a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 5 to make the score 3-1, and after Solomon won her tiebreaker in the second set to make the score 4-1, Padmanabhan provided the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6.
Chao added a three-set win at No. 3, winning the third set 6-2 to make the overall score in the match 6-1, before Redlands closed out with the final two points. Jamie Pollok fought off a stubborn challenge from freshman Marie Fleming (Boston, Mass.) at No. 4, winning 6-0, 6-7, 6-4, while Natalie Etchegaray prevailed at No. 2 in three sets over Mae Coyiuto (Makati City, Philippines) 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action next weekend for the Ojai Tournament, the final tune-up before SCIAC Championships take place in May.
