Pasadena/Westwood, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated Caltech 20-4 and fell to No. 4 UCLA 22-5 in a pair of road matches on Saturday.
With the split, the Sagehens move to 13-16 overall on the season, while improving to 4-2 in the SCIAC with the Caltech win.
The Caltech match came first at 11 a.m. in Pasadena, and the Sagehens wasted little time in taking control, leading 5-0 after the first quarter and 11-0 at the half.
Freshman Katy Schafer (Los Altos, Calif.) had six goals, the most for any Sagehen this season, while sophomores Sallie Walecka (Palo Alto, Calif.), Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) and Chrissie Alving-Trinh (Fresno, Calif. - pictured) each had three. Freshman Alana Friedman (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) also had multi-goals with two apiece, while sophomore Carter Grant (Carpinteria, Calif.) had one.
In the second game of the day, UCLA outscored Pomona-Pitzer 8-0 in the second quarter to take a 13-1 lead into halftime. Sophomore Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.) led the Sagehens with two goals, while junior Brenda Iglesias (South Gate, Calif.), Woodward and Wescott each had one.
Pomona-Pitzer has two big SCIAC matches this week, traveling to Chapman on Wednesday and then hosting the regular season finale on Saturday at 11 a.m. against CMS.
