Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Katy Schafer (Los Altos, Calif. - pictured) had four goals to lead Pomona-Pitzer to a 9-6 win over Concordia (Irvine) in its first game of the day on Saturday afternoon at Haldeman Pool on the second day of the Claremont Convergence.
Sophomore Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) had all three Pomona-Pitzer goals in a 14-3 to No. 9 Long Beach State in the second game on Saturday evening. With the split, the Sagehens move to 5-7 on the season, and 2-2 at the Claremont Convergence, with both losses coming to top 10 teams (including 17-7 to No. 6 UC Irvine yesterday).
Schafer had back to back goals to start the second quarter against Concordia and give Pomona-Pitzer a 5-1 lead. After the Eagles scored the last goal of the first half and the first goal of the second to pull within 5-3, Schafer scored again with 6:40 left in the third quarter to make the score 6-3.
The Eagles had back-to-back goals to close within 7-6 with 4:12 left to play, but Woodward scored 33 seconds later to stretch the lead back to two, and Schafer sealed it with her fourth in the final minute to make the final score 9-6. Sophomore Mahalia Prater-Fahey added two goals for the Sagehens in the first quarter to give her team the lead for good with 48 seconds left, while Woodward added her first of the day with 12 seconds left.
After Woodward scored early against Long Beach State to cut the Pomona-Pitzer deficit to 2-1, Long Beach State scored eight straight goals before Woodward ended the drought with 56 seconds left in the third. Senior goalie Sarah Tuggy (Los Angeles, Calif.) came through with 12 saves for the Sagehens, several of which were on point-blank shots. Tuggy also had nine saves in the Concordia win. Christina Kotsia led Long Beach State with four goals.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action next on Tuesday when it hosts Connecticut College.
