Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Katy Schafer (Los Altos, Calif. - pictured) broke a 7-7 tie with her fourth goal of the game late in the fourth quarter to give the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team a 9-7 win over Occidental on Saturday.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 10-14 on the year and 2-1 in the SCIAC, while snapping a six-game losing streak. Occidental slips to 7-16 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Schafer scored on a penalty shot early in the fourth quarter to give Pomona-Pitzer a 7-4 lead, but Nanea Fujiyama scored three goals in a row (giving her five for the match) to knot the score up 7-7 with 3:44 to play.
Occidental got the ball back with a chance to take the lead, but sophomore Sallie Walecka (Palo Alto, Calif.) came up with a steal, and Schafer followed with a clutch goal to give the Sagehens some momentum back, and sophomore Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.) added an insurance goal with just over 2:00 remaining to make the score 9-7, and Pomona-Pitzer was able to hold on from there.
Pomona-Pitzer held a 3-1 lead at halftime behind some stingy defense, but Occidental scored the first two goals of the second half to tie the score 3-3. Sophomore Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) answered with her second goal of the game, sophomore Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) made it 5-3, and Schafer scored her second to push the lead to 6-3.
After Occidental scored the final goal of the third period to make it 6-4, Schafer converted a penalty shot to restore the three-goal lead before Occidental's comeback.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action at home on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest against Redlands.
