Claremont, Calif. - Freshmen Mae Coyiuto (Makati City, Philippines) and Marie Fleming (Boston, Mass. - pictured) earned big individual victories in singles against the No. 2 team in the nation, but CMS was able to defend its home court and take a 7-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.
The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer, ranked No. 12 in the nation, to 7-5 on the season, including 3-1 in conference. The Athenas remain unbeaten at 18-0 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC with the victory.
Coyiuto earned a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 3 singles, taking the tiebreaker 7-4 in the second set to improve her record to 10-2 on the season. Fleming returned to the line-up after a one match absence and showed some of her old form that had her start the season on a hot streak, winning 6-4, 5-7, 10-7. Senior Kara Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) also had a good battle in singles, winning the first set 6-4 at No. 5, but ended up falling in three sets.
CMS took all three doubles lines, with Fleming and senior Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif.) having the closest battle at No. 2, where they fell 8-6. Solomon fell in a first-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles before falling 7-6, 6-2, as the Sagehens pushed the Athenas in singles after falling into a 3-0 hole after doubles. Sophomore Sammy Chao (Hong Kong, China) also had a tight first set with Kristin Lim, the No. 1 ranked player in the West Region, but fell 6-4, 6-1.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Wednesday for a home match with Gustavus Adolphus at 4 p.m.
