Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team picked up its second straight 9-0 shutout as it defeated Cal Lutheran on Saturday afternoon in a SCIAC match at Pauley Courts.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 3-0 on the year (all in conference matches, including a 9-0 win over Whittier yesterday), while Cal Lutheran falls to 4-4 overall.
Freshmen Lea Lynn Yen (Fullerton, Calif. - pictured) and Mae Coyiuto (Makati City, Philppines) had the most dominant performances of the day, as Yen teamed with junior Arthi Padmanabhan (Saratoga, Calif.) to win 8-1 at No. 3 doubles and then took a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. Coyiuto earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles to improve to 3-0 in her young career.
Fellow freshman Marie Fleming (Boston, Mass.) also stayed perfect this spring with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, as she has lost only six games in her first six collegiate sets. She also combined with senior Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif.) for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while Solomon earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.
Junior Sammy Chao (Taipei, Taiwan) had her second straight close battle at No. 1 singles, pulling out a 6-2, 7-6 win with a 7-5 victory in the second-set tiebreaker over Lindsay Murphy. Junior Alex Antonoplis (La Canada, Calif.) rounded out the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Thursday when it hosts Trinity (Texas) for a 4:30 p.m. match.
