Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team swept all three doubles matches by identical 8-2 scores and did not drop a set in singles as it cruised to a 9-0 win over Whittier in a SCIAC match on Friday afternoon at Pauley Courts.
Pomona-Pitzer, which is ranked No. 15 nationally in the preseason ITA poll, improves to 2-0 on the year, both SCIAC matches, while Whittier falls to 2-1 after dropping its conference opener.
Freshman Marie Fleming (Boston, Mass. - pictured) moved up to No. 4 singles after a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 against La Verne last weekend and had similar success despite moving up two lines, earning a 6-1, 6-1 win. She started out up 4-0 in the first set to win her first 16 collegiate games of the spring season, before dropping the fifth game and settling for the 6-1 win in the set.
Fleming also combined with senior Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif.) for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Solomon provided the clinching fifth point at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-3), moments after Arthi Padmanabhan (Saratoga, Calif.) wrapped up a two-set win (6-0, 6-0) at No. 6 singles to make the score 4-0.
Freshman Mae Coyiuto (Makati City, Philippines) also picked up her second singles win of her young career, earning a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles, a week after going three sets to win at No. 2 against La Verbe. Senior Kara Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) earned an 8-2 doubles win at No. 1 and then earned a quick two-setter at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-2).
Junior Sammy Chao (Hong Kong, China), who teamed with Wang for the comfortable win at No. 1 doubles, had a battle at the top singles line with Whittier's Maegan Zamilpa. Chao won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4 in the breaker), which did not conclude until all of the other singles matches had been completed. She started the second set with an immediate break, and captured the 7-6, 6-3 win to finish off the 9-0 victory for the team.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action again tomorrow for another SCIAC home match against Cal Lutheran, beginning at 11 a.m.
