Claremont, Calif. - Senior Emily Kawahara (Sacramento, Calif. - pictured) had a 6-1, 6-1 win at singles and an 8-2 win at doubles to help the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team capture a 9-0 win over Occidental on Saturday at Pauley Courts.
With the win, the 15th-ranked Sagehens improve to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC. Occidental falls to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Junior Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif.) had the toughest test for Pomona-Pitzer, as she needed a third set to defeat Occidental's Kris Subbiah. Solomon led 5-0 in the first set before holding on to win 6-4 after Subbiah rallied, then fell 6-4 in the second set. However, the third set (extended tiebreaker format) was all Solomon, as she won 10-1 to help Pomona-Pitzer finish off the shutout.
Solomon and doubles partner Kara Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) also cruised to an 8-1 win, and Wang earned a solid win at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-2. Sophomores Arthi Padmanabhan (Saratoga, Calif.) and Sammy Chao (Hong Kong, China) remained unbeaten in doubles this year at 9-0 with an 8-1 win at No. 2, while Chao improved to 7-0 in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2.
The Sagehens also got some strong performances from the bottom of their line-up, as freshman Kira Woods (Colorado Springs, Colo.) picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5, while Alex Antonoplis (La Canada, Calif.) won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6.
