Whittier, Calif. – Sophomore Sammy Chao (Hong Kong, China) returned from injury with a dominant performance at No. 2 singles to help the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team to a 7-2 win over Whittier on Friday in its SCIAC opener.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 7-5 on the year, including 1-0 in SCIAC play.
Chao, who had not seen any singles action since March 13, took a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Chloe Dredge to remain undefeated this year in singles play (6-0). She also teamed with doubles partner Arthi Padmanabhan (Saratoga, Calif.) for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles to remain undefeated there as well (8-0).
No. 1 singles player Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif.) had a strong performance as well, winning 6-3, 6-2, and taking her doubles match with Kara Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) 8-4. Likewise, No. 4 singles player Nicole Holsted (Edmund, Okla.) had a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles and teamed with Emily Kawahara (Sacramento, Calif.) for an 8-1 win in doubles.
Freshman Kira Woods (Colorado Springs, Colo.) stepped into the line-up at No. 5 singles and had a 7-5, 6-2 win as well for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow for a SCIAC match against Occidental at 9:30 a.m. at Pauley Courts.
