La Verne, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team took a pair of games from SCIAC foes at the La Verne Mini-Tournament on Saturday.
The Sagehens defeated Redlands 13-7 in the morning, and then captured a dramatic 15-13 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the afternoon. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 3-5 on the year with the two wins (neither game counts towards conference standings).
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps game was back and forth the whole way through, until senior Annie Oxborough-Yankus (Wallingford, Conn. - pictured, photo by Robert Chew) snapped a 13-13 tie with a goal with three minutes remaining in regulation.
After a key defensive play from senior Perri Hopkins (Agoura, Calif.), who had a field block on a CMS shot attempt, freshman Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.) tacked on an insurance goal to make the score 15-13 with 2:08 to play.
The Athenas led 13-12 early in the fourth quarter, before freshman Carter Grant (Carpinteria, Calif.) tied the score up, to begin a game-closing 3-0 run. Pomona-Pitzer then had to hold off a man-up situation for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and were able to keep the Athenas off the scoreboard to preserve the win.
Oxborough-Yankus led the Sagehens with four goals, while Hopkins and Prater-Fahey each added three.
The first match of the day was an easier 13-7 win over Redlands, as the Sagehens got three goals from freshman Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.), and two from Oxborough-Yankus, Hopkins, freshman Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) and sophomore Kerstin Henshall (Moraga, Calif.).
Woodward and Westcott also had two goals in the CMS win, giving them multi-goal games in both contests. Freshman goalie Rachel Noll also had an outstanding effort with 12 saves for the Sagehens, nine of which came in the second half to stymie any Redlands comeback hopes.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on March 2-3 at the Cal Lutheran Tournament.
