Sagehens Put The Clamps On La Verne, Pull Out 58-49 Road Win

Box Score

La Verne, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team held La Verne to only one point for a span of 10:11 in the second half as it came back from a seven-point halftime deficit to capture a 58-49 win on Saturday evening.

Sophomore guard Kyle McAndrews (Seattle, Wash. - pictured) had 16 points to lead the Sagehens, who improve to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC with the win. La Verne falls to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the SCIAC with the loss.

The Leopards led 34-27 at the half, and after the Sagehens came back to tie the score 38-38 on a jumper from senior guard Xavyr Moss (Federal Way, Wash.), La Verne went ahead 41-38 on a three-point play from Paul Titchener with 12:25 to play.

The Leopards, though, would not make another field goal until 2:14 left, when the Sagehens led 52-42 after a pivotal 14-1 run. The only point for La Verne in that entire stretch was a free throw at the 4:09 mark with Pomona-Pitzer leading 47-41.

McAndrews started the run with two foul shots with 11:05 to play, then split two foul shots with 10:32 left to level the score at 41-41. Neither team could score for over four minutes, until two foul shots from senior forward Donald Okpalugo (Manchester, Eng.) gave the Sagehens the lead for good at 43-41 with 7:06 left.

Junior forward John Weiss (Cleveland, Ohio) hit a lay-up with 6:23 to go to make the score 45-41, and a McAndrews lay-up with 4:49 left made it a 9-0 run and a 47-41 lead. Jake Veith made one foul shot to end the long scoring drought for the Leopards, but junior guard Armand Gray (San Francisco, Calif.) got to the rim for a lay-up with 3:48 left, and three more Sagehen foul shots pushed the lead to 52-42 with 2:35 to go.

Veith made the first field goal for the Leopards in over 10 minutes when he converted a lay-up with 2:14 to go, but the Sagehens were not threatened the rest of the way, building the lead up to as many as 14 at 58-44 before settling for the 58-49 win.

The Pomona-Pitzer defense held La Verne to just 17-55 shooting for the game, including just 2-9 from three-point territory. Veith had 13 points and Jourdan Simmonds had 10 for the Leopards in the losing cause. Pomona-Pitzer shot 16-45 from the floor and 2-11 from three-point territory, but was 24-32 from the foul line to account for the winning margin.

The Sagehens return to action on Saturday when they host Clarke at 7:30 p.m. for the final game before the holiday break. Pomona-Pitzer does not resume SCIAC play again until a road game at Caltech on Jan. 5.
