Box Score The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens fell to 6-11 (2-4 in SCIAC) after a tough 64-55 loss to the University of Redlands Bulldogs Wednesday night. The game was close early on as Sagehen center Donald Okpalugo (SO, Manchester, UK) started off the game attacking the basket, forcing the fouls on Redlands to pile up early, and arguably the best player on the Bulldog team, Jordan Sanvictores, was forced to the bench with two quick fouls. Unfortunately, when Redlands went to their bench they found the spark they needed in sophomore guard Brian Kuklok. Kuklok ignited a run by the Bulldogs by hitting three quick three pointers which expanded the game to a double digit margin which they held until halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer looked strong coming out of the half, connecting on four of their first six shots, and bringing the game to within six points. However, every time the Sagehens would pull within striking distance, Kuklok would manage to hit another much needed three pointer–hitting a total of 6 in the game.
In the second half, Jake Klewer (FR, Tuscon, AZ) stepped up for the Sagehens making big plays both offensively and defensively. He had a two nice blocks to go along with a steal, nine rebounds–three on the offensive glass–and 15 points to lead the Sagehens. Donald Okpalugo also played well for the Sagehens with 13 points on 5-10 shooting, including a monster two-handed dunk in which he got fouled and another dunk the managed to throw off the back rim, forcing the ball to soar straight up and fall back into the netting.
In the final minutes, the Sagehens had their opportunities to make a late game push, however, Redlands was able to break a few full court traps for some easy layups to keep the game out of reach. The Sagehens had their chances, but the ball just didn't seem to bounce their way.
The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens will try to rebound from this loss as they stay at home to face La Verne on Saturday, January 29th at 7:30 PM.
