RICHARDSON, TX. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team fell just short of advancing to the next round of the NCAA Tournament after their 5-4 loss to CMS on Sunday afternoon at the UTD Tennis Courts.
The Sagehens and Athenas met for the third time this season with a top 5 matchup coming in the NCAA Tournament in the Regional final.
Pomona-Pitzer got ahead of CMS for the first time in their three meetings after the doubles competition after they earned wins at #1 and #2 doubles. Nina Ye and Lauren Rha rolled through their doubles match at #1 after they defeated Batoshvili and Chulani 8-1. The Sagehens got another point at #2 with the team of Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou winning 8-3 over Wurster and Selby, but the Athenas got one back at #3 doubles as Janie Marcus and Georgia Ryan fell to Eisenman and Brissett 8-6.
With the Sagehens heading into singles with a 2-1 lead, they needed three wins to clinch over CMS. Zhou continued her impressive run at #1 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Wurster but CMS got one back at #2 with Ye losing her match against Yoon 6-1, 6-4.
Every other match went into a third set after #1 and #3 singles finished and CMS got even after Ryan lost at #2 singles to Chulani 6-3, 2-6, 2-6. Rha got the Sagehens back on top to come within one point after her 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at #5 singles, but CMS was able to fight back with a win at #6 singles as Marcus fell to Eisenman 6-2. 6-7, 6-2 to even the score at 4-4.
The match came down to #4 singles as Amelia Poor was matched up against Brissett of CMS. Poor got out to a win in the first set 6-4 but Brissett battled back with a 6-4 win to force a third set for the right to advance into the next round. Brissett came out victorious with a 6-3 win as the Athenas handed the Sagehens their third loss of the season against the conference rival.
