Sagehens Compete Sweep over Poets with 15-0 Shutout in Game Two

WHITTIER, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team earned a tight 7-6 comeback victory over the Poets in game one of their doubleheader. Isaac Kim highlighted the Sagehens efforts at the plate with a home run with JC Ng, Jimmy Legg, and Caleb Millikan all recording RBIs as well. Jake Hilton pitched six innings for the Sagehens, recording nine strikeouts with Eric Prough and Hannah Seo combining for the remaining three innings with Seo earning the save. 

Pomona-Pitzer 7, Whittier 6

The Poets jumped out to earn early lead after scoring six runs in the second inning. Whittier found the plate with two RBI singles, a two-RBI single, an RBI walk as well as a fielder's choice ball to take a 6-0 lead. The Sagehens responded in the top of the third inning after an RBI single from Caleb Millikan brought in Matt Nishimura and JC Ng, who scored off an error to cut the lead to 6-2. Later in the fourth inning, Will Kinney scored on a wild pitch before JC Ng recorded an RBI groundout to cut the led to 6-4. The Sagehens continued to chip away at the Poets lead in the fifth inning with an RBI line out to left field off the bat of Jimmy Legg, bringing Jack Colton across the plate to pull Pomona-Pitzer within one at 6-5. 

In the seventh inning, the Sagehens knotted things at 6-6 with Caleb Millikan reaching on a fielder's choice ball that resulted in Nate Jakobs crossing home plate. The Sagehens put the finishing touches in the 7-6 win with a solo home run from Isaac Kim in the ninth inning over the left field wall to give the Sagehens their first lead of the day and eventual victory in game one. 

Pomona-Pitzer 15, Whittierc 0

After spreading out their offense over the course of a full nine innings in game one, the Sagehens wasted no time in game two, scoring six runs in the first and four more in the third. Nate Jakobs hit an RBI double to left center to bring in the Sagehens first run in the first inning before Caleb Millikan brought Jakobs home with an RBI single to center. The Sagehens kept things going with Jack Colton scoring off a wild pitch before Jimmy Legg hit an RBI single to bring in Millikan, giving the Sagehens a 4-0 lead. Will Kinney brought in the next two runs for the Sagehens with a two-RBI single to third base to cap off a fast start to game two. 

After a scoreless second inning, the Sagehens got back to work in the third inning as David Bedrosian started the inning with a solo home run before Pomona-Pitzer found themselves in a bases loaded situation. Nate Jakobs earned his second RBI of the game, this time with a walk to make it 8-0. Jack Colton was hit by the pitch in the next at bat, also earning an RBI to increase the lead to 9-0. Pomona-Pitzer added one more run in the inning with an RBI sac fly from Millikan to bring in Isaac Kim, putting the Sagehens up a convincing 10-0 heading into the fourth. 

The Sagehens continued to do damage in the sixth inning as David Bedrosian hit a two-RBI home run to right field to increase the Sagehens lead to 12-0. In the top of the seventh, the Sagehens piled it on as Jimmy Legg hit an RBI single with Bedrosian reaching on a fielder's choice to also bring in a run before a wild pitch brought in Millikan for the Sagehens 15th run of the day. With the Poets unable to get anything going, the Sagehens earned the 15-0 seven inning victory to end the 2023 season.
