LAKE NONA, FL. – Angie Zhou earned the 2023 NCAA Division III Singles National Championship after her 6-2, 6-2 win over Olivia Soffer of Babson on Monday morning at the USTA National Campus.
Zhou reached the National Championship for the second consecutive season and now becomes the fourth Sagehen to be crowned singles champion joining Shelley Keeler, Claire Turchi, and Siobhan Finicane.
Zhou only faced one three-set match throughout her championship run and went 64-23 in singles matches during the tournament.
Soffer came into the singles tournament as the No. 1 overall seed with the Championship Match featuring both top seeds of the bracket. Zhou broke Soffer to start the match and took a 2-1 lead. Zhou got on a run in the first set and took the final four games to take a convincing first set 6-2.
Zhou kept her momentum rolling into the second set and was forcing Soffer to hit some difficult shots to try and earn her points. Zhou jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set to take nine-straight games total before Soffer broke Zhou and followed with another win to cut back into the set at 5-2. Zhou got her serve back and finished off Soffer 6-2 in the second set to claim the Sagehens' fourth Singles Title in program history.
