LAKE NONA, FL. – The Sagehen doubles team of Nina Ye and Lauren Rha fell in the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships to the Babson team of Matia Cristiani and Olivia Soffer 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
Ye and Rha earned their way to the semifinals after upsetting the No. 1 doubles seed from Chicago and then earned a three-set victory in the quarterfinals against NYU.
The Sagehens doubles team took some time to get going in the first set as Babson opened up with a few games to take an early lead. Rha and Ye managed to get a few wins in the first set but went down 6-3.
Ye and Rha flipped the script to open the second set and took the first three games to hold a big 3-0 advantage needing a win in set number two. Babson rallied to get a few games back, but the Sagehens were able to hold off the comeback attempt to take a 6-3 win and force a third set.
Babson controlled the third set early on to force the Sagehens to battle back to try to force a tiebreaker. Babson took a 5-2 lead and after the Sagehens won a game to make it 5-3, Babson held and ended the Sagehens run in the doubles semifinals.
Because of their run in the doubles bracket, both Ye and Rha will earn All-American honors.
