Box Score LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team opened their three-game SCIAC series against La Verne with a 10-8 loss on Friday afternoon at Ben Hines Field.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 15-13 overall and 6-6 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens tallied 14 total hits in the with six players having multi-hit games in JC Ng, Nate Jakobs, Isaac Kim, Jack Colton, William Kinney, and Matthew Nishimura while Jimmy Legg and Caleb Millikan each had one. Jake Hilton got the start in game one and went five innings with six hits and three runs given up in the no-decision. Wade Lawson, Jake Albro, and Eric Prough came in out of the bullpen with Prough getting the loss.
Pomona-Pitzer started with a big first inning on the road after loading the bases with two outs. Colton got the scoring going with a two-out two-run single while Millikan followed with an RBI double to put the Sagehens on top 3-0. Kinney and Nishimura followed with back-to-back RBI singles to plate two more in the inning to get the Sagehens out to a 5-0 lead in the first.
La Verne got their offense going in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single followed by a sacrifice fly to put a three spot on the board to cut the Sagehens' lead down to two runs at 5-3.
After giving up three runs on defense, the Sagehens got their five-run lead right back in the top of the sixth after Jakobs earned an RBI single and Kim blasted a two-run shot to left center to extend the lead to 8-3.
Hilton exited the game after five innings and the Sagehen bullpen immediately struggled to hang on to the lead. The Leopards chased two relief pitchers out of the sixth inning and scored five runs in the inning to tie the ballgame at 8-8.
La Verne went on to take the lead over the Sagehens off of a fielding error in the seventh and tacked on one more in the eighth to take a 10-8 lead. The Sagehens brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but couldn't muster up any offense late as the Sagehens dropped game one on the road.
