Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team finished their season series against Occidental with a 5-1 win and an 11-9 for the sweep on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: with the wins, the Sagehens improve to 13-11 overall and 4-4 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Occidental 1
The Sagehens were led by Nate Jakobs who turned in the only two-hit performance for the Sagehens going 2-4 with a home run. JC Ng, Isaac Kim, Caleb Millikan, Donovan Crook and Peter Savas also picked up one hit. Harry Deliyannis got the win in the first game of the doubleheader after he went 6.2 innings and gave up just one run, scattered six hits and had five strikeouts. Eric Prough relived Deliyannis with 0.1 innings of work while Eamonn Woods picked up his second save of the year.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out in front with a solo home run by Jakobs in the first inning to play from in front in game one of their doubleheader. Occidental responded in their next at-bats with a solo home run of their own but couldn't add on as they left the bases loaded with the score even at 1-1.
The Sagehens reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Ng doubled down the line to bring home Legg to put the Sagehens up 2-1 after five innings of play.
The offense got going late in the game to add on some insurance runs for the bullpen. The Sagehens got one run across in the seventh off of an RBI single from Millikan and two more in the eighth off back-to-back walks with the bases loaded as Pomona-Pitzer took the series and game one of the doubleheader against the Tigers.
Pomona-Pitzer 11, Occidental 9
The Sagehens were led by Ng and Crook who each went 2-4 in the win while Jimmy Legg, Jakobs, Kim, Millikan, Jack Colton, William Kinney, Matthew Nishimura, and Tanner DeGrazia had one each. Ethan Collins got the ball in game two and went 4.1 innings while Eric Prough came in for 2.2 innings as a middle reliever. Wade Lawson came in late and picked up his first career win while Ben Cohen earned his first save of the season.
The Sagehens played from in front again in game two after they loaded the bases in their first at-bats. The first run came across off a wild pitch followed by a two-run double off the wall from Colton to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Tigers got one back in the top of the second off a single to right field in what was a close call at the plate went in favor of Occidental to get their first run across. Occidental then took over the lead from the Sagehens with a three-run third as Pomona-Pitzer trailed for the first time in the series at 4-3.
Occidental put together another three-run inning in the top of the fifth off three consecutive RBI base hits to extend their lead to 7-3 over the Sagehens.
The Sagehens responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI from Crook and grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, but still managed to cut into the lead at 7-5 heading to the sixth.
Pomona-Pitzer cut the lead down to one run after Ng homered to right field, but the Tigers tacked on two more in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-6 late in the ballgame.
The Sagehen bats came alive when they needed them most as a huge pinch-hit at-bat from Tanner DeGrazia resulted in a three-run game-tying homer to left field making it all even at 9-9.
Lawson kept the Tigers off the board in the eighth and the Sagehens came away with the game-winning hit as Kinney drove in two runners with the bases loaded to put the Sagehens up 11-9. Cohen came on for the close and after having the bases loaded, got out of a jam to pick up the save as the Sagehens swept the Tigers in their regular season series.
