Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team opened up their three-game series against Tufts University with a 6-3 loss on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 8-11 overall this season.
The Sagehens were led by Nate Jakobs who went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with a home run in the loss. Caleb Millikan also had a multi-hit game going 2-4 with a run scored while Donovan Crook, Jack Colton and William Kinney all had hits in the game as well.
Tufts got up on Pomona-Pitzer early with the first run of the game off of a sacrifice fly in the top of the second to play from in front with a 1-0 lead. The Sagehen offense couldn't get any production first time through the lineup and the Jumbos capitalized with a four-run third off of three hits and an error in the inning to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Jumbos added another run in the top of the seventh with an RBI triple in the gap to take a 6-0 as the Sagehens continued to look for production on offense.
Jakobs got the Sagehens on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to right field and Pomona-Pitzer went on to load the bases as the Tufts went to the bullpen with the bases loaded a one out. Kinney came up clutch with a two-out two-run single with the bases loaded to cut the lead down to 6-3 as the Sagehens trimmed their deficit heading into the eighth.
Pomona-Pitzer brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings but couldn't find a big hit late in the game as they fell in game one of their three-game series with Tufts.
