Sagehens Sweep Whittier 9-0; Fall To Azusa Pacific 4-3

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team earned a win over SCIAC opponent Whittier 9-0 but fell to Azusa Pacific 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The Sagehens started the day with a 9-0 sweep over SCIAC opponent Whittier. Pomona-Pitzer breezed through the double's competition taking all three wins with a combined six games lost between the three teams.  

In doubles, Nina Ye and Angie Zhou of Pomona-Pitzer won 8-1 against Jasmine Saunders and Malvika Suryavanshi of Whittier. Janie Marcus and Alex Coleman of Pomona-Pitzer also won 8-1 against Maci Davis and Keeley Arendt of Whittier. Rachel Homan and Rachel Roxarzade of Pomona-Pitzer won 8-4 against Manasvi Vardham and Emily List of Whittier.

The Singles competition went similar to doubles for the Sagehens as every singles matchup was won in straight sets. Patria Aziz of Pomona-Pitzer won 6-0, 6-1 against Jasmine Saunders of Whittier. Janie Marcus of Pomona-Pitzer won 6-0, 6-0 against Keeley Arendt of Whittier. Samantha Moore-Thomson of Pomona-Pitzer won 6-0, 6-0 against Manasvi Vardham of Whittier. Alex Coleman of Pomona-Pitzer won 6-0, 6-1 against Maci Davis of Whittier. Rachel Homan of Pomona-Pitzer won 6-2, 6-3 against Malvika Suryavanshi of Whittier. Rachel Roxarzade of Pomona-Pitzer won 6-1, 6-1 against Emily List of Whittier. 

The Sagehens then traveled to Azusa Pacific for their second match of the day where they fell 4-3.  Using the Division I format, the Sagehens dropped two of the three doubles resulting in Azusa Pacific picking up one point for the doubles matches.

Eleonora Liga and Madison Kane of Azusa Pacific defeated Nina Ye and Angie Zhou of Pomona-Pitzer in #1 doubles 6-2. However, Samantha Moore-Thomson and Amelia Poor of Pomona-Pitzer won their match against Miruna Tudor and April Wong in #2 doubles 6-4. The #3 doubles match was a close contest with Katia Betancourt and Katherine Nguyen of Azusa Pacific edging out Marissa Markey and Lauren Rha of Pomona-Pitzer 7-6 (7-5).

In the singles competition, Eleonora Liga of Azusa Pacific defeated Angie Zhou of Pomona-Pitzer in the #1 singles 6-1, 5-7, 6-0. Madison Kane of Azusa Pacific also won her match against Nina Ye of Pomona-Pitzer in the #2 singles 2-6, 6-1, 7-6. However, Pomona Pitzer's Patria Aziz won against Vini Bautista of Azusa Pacific in the #3 singles 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. April Wong of Azusa Pacific emerged victorious against Janie Marcus of Pomona-Pitzer in the #4 singles 6-0, 7-6. Marissa Markey of Pomona-Pitzer won against Miruna Tudor of Azusa Pacific in the #5 singles 6-4, 6-3. Lastly, Amelia Poor of Pomona-Pitzer defeated Shannele Lopez of Azusa Pacific in the #6 singles 6-3, 6-6.
