Box Score AUSTIN, TX - The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team got off to a great start in their road series against Concordia (TX) in a 5-1 victory at Gardner-Webb Field on a windy Friday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-2 overall with a doubleheader against the Tornados tomorrow to conclude the series before league play starts next weekend.
Jake Hilton (Berkeley, CA / Berkeley HS) led the way with another dominant outing on the mound, collecting twelve strikeouts on the bump while allowing just three hits and two walks in the win. Concordia's biggest threat came in the fourth inning after the bases loaded on two walks with a bunt single sandwiched in between, but Hilton K'd the side to shut down the Tornados offense.
Eamonn Woods (Nashville, TN / Hume-Fogg Academic) came on in the eighth and pitched two strong innings of relief. Concordia would plate one in the 8th after a leadoff triple off the wall scored on a sac fly, but Woods, who earned two strikeouts of his own, would hold them to just the lone run on the afternoon, aided by a a diving catch by
Caleb Millikan (Berkeley, CA / Berkeley HS) to finish the game in the bottom of the ninth.
The Sagehens offense picked up five runs on eight hits and ten walks in support of Hilton and Woods. Sophomore JC NG (Foster City, CA / Menlo School) led off the game with a base hit down the left field line and eventually came around to score after a walk, steal and an RBI single from first-year
Donovan Crook (Alamo, CA / San Ramon Valley HS). Pomona-Pitzer would threaten with bases loaded in the second and third but didn't break the game open until the fifth inning.
After a Crook single and walks by Millikan and
Jackson Fleming (Dana Point, CA / Dana Hills HS), first-year Will Kinney (Pacifica, CA / Junipero Serra HS) picked up a line-drive 2-RBI base hit to left field. Matt Nishimura (Honolulu, HI / Punahou School) followed immediately with another RBI single to score Fleming and push the lead to 4-1 in favor of the Sagehens.
The last run of the game came after
Nate Jakobs led off the ninth inning with a line drive triple to the wall in right-center and scored on a wild pitch for a crucial Sagehens insurance run.
