CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team fell in the SCIAC Tournament Championship to CMS 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 19-2 overall and will await their position in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
The Sagehens dropped two of the three doubles against the Athenas to get into a hole heading into singles. Samantha Moore-Thomson and Alex Coleman fell at No. 3 doubles 8-1 but the Sagehens came back with a win at No. 2 doubles as Angie Zhou and Marissa Markey took an 8-4 victory. The big match of doubles came at No. 1 with Nina Ye and Maria Lyven. The Sagehens got into a tiebreaker match to decide who would go into singles with a 2-1 lead and the Athenas edged out the Sagehens for the 8-7 win.
The Sagehens started to battle back during singles as Zhou quickly earned a win at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1 but CMS got wins at No. 5 and No. 6 to get within one point of a win.
Pomona-Pitzer kept it interesting as Markey earned a win at No. 4 singles in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and Ye took a win at No. 2 7-6, 7-5 to set up a winner take all at No. 1 singles.
Lyven fell in the first set 6-4 but rallied to win set two 6-3 to set up a third set for the SCIAC Title. The Athenas were able to come away with the win by the score of 6-2 to take a 5-4 over the Sagehens to earn the SCIAC Tournament Title.
