CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team earned their way to the SCIAC Tournament Championship with their 5-0 win over Caltech in the Semifinals on Friday night at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
The Sagehens started out with a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches against Caltech. Angie Zhou and Marissa Markey got the wins going for the Sagehens at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 win followed by an 8-1 win at No. 3 by the team of Alicia Carmona Cornejo and Samantha Moore-Thomson. Pomona-Pitzer ended doubles play with a close win at No. 1 as Maria Lyven and Nina Ye got into a tiebreaker match 8-7 but came away with a 7-4 win.
After taking all three doubles matches, the Sagehens needed just two wins to clinch the match. Zhou doubled up on her wins after taking a win at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1 and Janie Marcus ended the day for the Sagehens with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 to send the Sagehens through to the SCIAC Tournament Championship.
