Box Score 2 ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team advanced all the way to the final game of the NCAA Regional Championship but fell to Chapman 6-3 on Saturday at Hart Park. The Sagehens beat the Panthers 17-8 in game one to force a winner-take-all game, but ultimately fell in game two.
Season Impact: with the loss in game two, the Sagehens' season come to an end with a 32-14 overall record, the first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2012, first win in an NCAA Tournament since 2010 and becomes the fifth team in program history to hit the 30-win mark.
Game 1: Pomona-Pitzer 17, Chapman 8
The Sagehens had seven players with multi-hit games and was led by David Bedrosian who had three hits in a 3-6 effort with three RBI's and a run scored. Caleb Millikan went 2-5 with a grand slam in the win while JC Ng, Kevin Lo, Nate Jakobs, Ryan Nishi, and Jack Damelio all tallied two hits as well.
Jake Albro got the start in game one for the Sagehens and pitched a stellar outing with seven strong innings only giving up four runs off of nine hits and three strikeouts.
The Sagehens got going early with three runs in the top of the first after Bedrosian singled home Ng and Nishi doubled with the bases loaded to bring in Bedrosian and Isaac Kim to put the Sagehens up 3-0 to start the game.
Chapman answered in the bottom of the first with a solo shot and the one more in the bottom of the second to cut the lead down to one at 3-2, but that was the closest the Panthers would come in game one.
The Sagehens started to pull away after they plated five runs in the top of the third after Damelio started with an RBI single and then a huge Grand Slam by Millikan to extend the lead to 8-2.
Pomona-Pitzer kept the offense going with four more in the fifth after Jimmy Legg walked with the baees loaded, Ng with a two RBI double and Lo capped off the inning with an RBI single to push the lead to 12-2. The Sagehens ended up extending the lead by two more in the top of the sixth with RBI's from Damelio and Legg before Chapman plated two more off of a two-run shot to left to make it 14-4 Sagehens heading into the eighth.
The Panthers came up with some offense late in the game with three runs in the eighth to cut it to 14-7, but the Sagehens got all three back in the ninth after a double by Bedrosian and an RBI by Jakobs to take a 17-7 lead.
Chapman added one more in the ninth, but the Sagehens dominated game one to set up a winner-take-all matchup for the Regional Championship.
Game 2: Pomona-Pitzer 3, Chapman 6
The Sagehens were led by Kevin Lo, Ryan Nishi and Jimmy Legg who each had two hits in the loss. Jake Hilton got the start on short rest for the Sagehens and after 2.1 innings of work, was pulled for Gabe Garcia who went 6.2 inning to keep the Sagehens in it with one run surrendered.
Chapman jumped out to a lead in the top of the first after a two-run homer and an RBI single to jump ahead 3-0. The Panthers added another two-run shot in the top of the third and then one more run in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-0 after four innings of play.
It took the Sagehens a while to get the bats going in game two as the first hit of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Sagehens managed to get some runs late in the game after they scored three in the bottom of the eighth after RBI's from Ng, Lo and Nishi to cut the lead down to 6-3. The Sagehens had the bases loaded with the go-ahead run at the plate, but the Panthers were able to get out of it to take the lead into the ninth.
The Sagehens had a chance again in the ninth after they got their leadoff man aboard to start the inning, but Chapman was able to hold off the Sagehens late to hang on for the win in the Regional Championship.
