Box Score 2 ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team advanced to the NCAA Regional Final after they split day two with a 3-1 loss to Chapman and a 7-5 extra innings win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday at Hart Park.
With the win against Cal Lutheran, the Sagehens become one of the final two teams left in the NCAA Regional and will face Chapman for a chance to advance to the Super Regional of the NCAA Tournament. The Sagehens will have to beat Chapman twice to claim the Regional Title while the Panthers will need just one win against the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer 7, Cal Lutheran 5
The Sagehens were led by Nate Jakobs who went 2-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored and delivered the go-ahead run in extra innings for the Sagehens. Ryan Nishi went 2-4 as well with two RBI's and Jimmy Legg went 2-5 in the win. The man of the game; However, belonged to starting pitcher Gabe Garcia. Garcia stepped up big for the Sagehens on the mound after only registering 11 innings pitched this season, Garcia got the ball in the elimination game and went eight inning and only allowed three hits and two runs.
Pomona-Pitzer got ahead early against the Kingsmen as JC Ng started with a sacrifice fly to bring home Nishi in the top of the third to make it 1-0. The Sagehens added two more in the top of the fourth as Jakobs got his first RBI with a single through the right side and then Caleb Millikan grounded out to bring home David Bedrosian to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Sagehens tacked on two more in the top of the sixth as Nishi brought home Jakobs on a sacrifice fly and Legg singled home Millikan to push the lead to 5-0.
The Kingsmen finally got to Garcia in the bottom of the eighth after they got two runs home on a double to left field, but Garcia finished the inning to keep the Sagehens on top 5-2.
Cal Lutheran got some late game magic to go their way as they came all the way back to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
The Sagehens immediately responded after Bedrosian got on first base, Jakobs hit an RBI triple down the right field line as Bedrosian came all the way around to score to reclaim the lead at 6-5. Pomona-Pitzer added one more for insurance as Nishi beat out an infield single to push the lead to two runs at 7-5 heading into the bottom of the 10th.
Prough battled back after allowing the winning run to reach first with no one out in the inning and slammed the door shut on the Kingsmen to push the Sagehens through to the final day of the NCAA Regional.
Pomona-Pitzer 1, Chapman 3
The Sagehens were led by Ryan Nishi who went 2-3 with the only RBI of the game for the Sagehens. JC Ng also collected two hits in a 2-4 effort while Kevin Lo, Isaac Kim, David Bedrosian, Caleb Millikan, Jack Damelio and Jimmy Legg all added one hit in the loss.
Harry Deliyannis got the start for the Sagehens and went six innings while only giving up three runs with just one earned and six strikeouts. Joe Williams came on in relief of Deliyannis in the seventh and pitched two shutout innings to give the Sagehens a chance late.
On the defensive end of the game, the Sagehens committed six errors that led to big scoring opportunities for the Panthers. On offense, the Sagehens tallied just one less hit than Chapman, but struggled getting hits with runners in scoring position. Pomona-Pitzer had a runner in scoring position in eight innings but only managed to get one run out of those chances.
Chapman took their lead early on in the game with one run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single and the another run in the bottom of the second from a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead over the Sagehens heading into the third.
The Panthers added on their third run in the bottom of the fifth on a single up the middle to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Sagehens got on the board in the top of the eighth after Nishi doubled home Millikan to cut the lead down to 3-1.
Pomona-Pitzer had the top of their lineup up in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate with no outs, but the Panthers' closer fought off the attempted comeback by the Sagehens and gave the Sagehens their first loss of the NCAA Tournament.
