Box Score ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team came away with a 14-6 win over Cal Lutheran in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at Hart Park.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 30-12 overall and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010.
The Sagehens were led by Isaac Kim who went 3-5 with two RBI's while David Bedrosian went 2-4 with four RBI's and Jimmy Legg went 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. JC Ng, Kevin Lo, Nate Jakobs and Jack Damelio all also tallied two-hits as the Sagehens had seven players with multi-hit games. Jake Hilton got the ball in game one and pitched a gem with six innings, four runs and 11 strikeouts for the win.
Cal Lutheran struck first in the top of the second off of a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead. The Kinsgmen lead didn't last long after the Sagehens scored their first run in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI grounder by Ryan Nishi to tie the game at 1-1.
The Kingsmen put up three runs in the top of the fourth aided by a few Sagehen errors to take a 4-1 lead, but the Sagehens started to chip away at the Kingsmen lead with a run off an error in the fourth and then a Bedrosian RBI single in the fifth to make it 4-3 Cal Lutheran.
The Sagehens changed the game in the bottom of the sixth after Ng singled home two Sagehens with the bases loaded, Lo added an RBI single and Bedrosian broke the game open with a three-run bomb to make it 9-4 Sagehens after six innings of play.
Pomona-Pitzer piled on with five more in the bottom of the seventh after getting to the Kingsmen bullpen. Jimmy Legg singled home Damelio, Lo walked in a run, Kim doubled home two more Sagehens and Bedrosian capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to break the game wide open at 14-4.
Cal Lutheran added two consolation runs in the top of the eighth, but the Sagehen offense and Hilton propelled Pomona-Pitzer to their first win in the NCAA Tournament since 2010.
