Box Score LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell to La Verne 4-3 on Friday afternoon in game one of their SCIAC Tournament at Ben Hines Field.
With the loss, the Sagehens will need to win two games on Saturday to advance to the SCIAC Tournament Championship on Sunday.
The Sagehens were led by Isaac Kim who went 3-5 in the loss. JC Ng and Nate Jakobs tallied two-hit games while Kevin Lo, David Bedrosian, and Ryan Nishi each ended up with one hit. Jake Hilton got the ball for the Sagehens and went six inning with two runs surrendered before giving way to Eric Prough for 1.1 innings of relief work while Joe Williams ended up with the loss with 0.2 innings.
La Verne jumped out early in the ballgame with an RBI single in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead before the Sagehens responded in the top of the second with a homer by Jakobs to make it even at 1-1.
The Sagehens went on to take the lead in their next at-bats as Bedrosian brought home Ng on a ground out to put the Sagehens up 2-1 in the top of the third.
The Sagehen lead didn't last long as the Leopards responded in the bottom half of the inning off of an RBI single to make it 2-2.
Pomona-Pitzer reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth after back-to-back doubles by Kim and Bedrosian put the Sagehens up 3-2 where they held the lead until the bottom of the eighth.
La Verne waited until the bottom of the eighth to post the only multi-run inning of the game as they tripled home the tying run and then the Sagehens gifted the lead off of a passed ball to make it 4-3 La Verne heading into the ninth.
The Sagehens got the tying run aboard in the ninth, but La Verne shut the door on the Sagehens in game one of the SCIAC Tournament.
