Sagehens Complete Sweep Over Whittier With Doubleheader Run-Rule Wins

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 23 Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team finished off the sweep of Whittier College with a 16-5 win and a 13-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 24-4 overall and 12-3 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Kevin Lo who went a perfect 3-3 in the win with five RBI's and three runs scored. David Bedrosian and Jimmy Legg each tallied two hits while Isaac Kim added three RBI's. Jake Hilton got the start in game one and went the complete seven innings for his fifth win of the season with five runs surrendered and six strikeouts.

The Sagehens got things going with a bang in the bottom of the first as Bedrosian led off the inning with a solo shot homer to center field to put the Sagehens up 1-0. Nate Jakobs added one more for the Sagehens after a base hit and an error brought in the second run of the game to put Pomona-Pitzer up 2-0 after the first.

The Poets answered in the top of the second with a solo shot of their own to cut the lead down to 2-1 and tied the game later in the inning with an RBI single.

The Sagehens kept the scoring going in the bottom of the second as they plated four more in the inning.  Bedrosian got his second RBI in as many innings with a single up the middle and Kim capped off the inning with three-run bomb to put the Sagehens back on top 6-2.

Pomona-Pitzer kept the runs coming as they plated five in the third after they loaded the bases and after RBI's from Lo, Legg, and Bedrosian to extend the lead to 11-2.

The Poets got one back in the fourth but the Sagehen offense kept adding to its lead with a sacrifice fly from Corey Stofko and an RBI double to put the Sagehens up 10 at 13-3.  Whittier answered again with a two-run homer in the sixth but the Sagehens got over the run-rule mark with a three-run homer by Lo to end the game in seven innings.

The Sagehens were led by Caleb Millikan who went a perfect 4-4 in game two with five RBI's in the win. Jakobs also had a nice night going 3-4 with four runs scored and Kim also registered a multi-hit game with a 2-4 performance. Ethan Collins got the start in game two and went four innings but Eamonn Woods picked up the win with three innings of relief work.

Whittier struck first in game two of the doubleheader after a defensive miscue allowed the opening run to school to put the Poets up 1-0.  The Whittier lead was short-lived as the Sagehens plated three runs in the bottom of the first after RBI's from Millikan and a score off of a wild pitch made it 3-1. Kim added one more for the Sagehens in the bottom of the second off of a sacrifice fly, but the Poets put one run on the board in back-to-back innings to cut into the lead at 5-3.

Pomona-Pitzer started the break the game open in the bottom of the fourth after they put another three runs on the board after RBI singles from Fleming, Jakobs and Millikan extended the lead to 8-3. 

The Sagehens continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth with one run off of a Bedrosian RBI up the middle and then Kim belted a two-run shot to left center to push the lead to 11-3. Pomona-Pitzer wasn't done there as they strung together a few base hits and a two-run double by Millikan gave the Sagehens a 10-run lead at 13-3 after five innings of play.

The Sagehens and Poets went scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning as the Sagehens completed the sweep over Whittier to remain towards in the top of the table in the SCIAC.
