Box Score WHITTIER, CA. – The No. 23 Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated SCIAC opponent Whittier College 18-10 on game one of their three-game series on Friday afternoon at Whittier.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 22-4 overall and 10-3 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Nate Jakobs and Jimmy Legg who each notched three hits on the night while Jackson Fleming, Ryan Nishi, Isaac Kim and JC Ng all tallied multi-hit games as well with Kim getting five RBI's including a grand slam in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer wasted no time getting the lead as they struck for two runs in the top of the firt after RBI's from Ryan Nishi and Nate Jakobs put the Sagehens up 2-0. Whittier responded In the bottom half of the first with three runs to take over the lead from the Sagehens with a 3-2 lead.
The Sagehens reclaimed the lead in their next at-bats after Jimmy Legg tied the game with an RBI double and then Nishi cleared the bases with three RBI's to put Pomona-Pitzer back on top 6-3. Jakobs went on to add another to the Sagehens' total as he brought home Nishi on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-3.
The Sagehens continued to score at least one run in each of their first four innings with one from Isaac Kim on a sacrifice fly and then four in the top of the fourth with RBI's from Legg, JC Ng, and David Bedrosian to push the lead to 12-3.
After facing their largest deficit of the night, the Poets started the chip away at the lead with two in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the bottom of the seventh to bring the game back into reach with the Sagehens up 12-9.
With Whittier back within three, the Sagehens needed to put up some insurance runs and did so in a big way with a grand slam from Kim to bring the lead to 16-9 in the eighth. The Sagehens went on to add two more with a two-run homer from Caleb Millikan as the Sagehens opened their series against Whittier with a win.
