Box Score 2 LA VERNE, CA. – The No. 14 Pomona-Pizer Baseball team took the SCIAC series over No. 4 La Verne after they split the doubleheader with a 14-3 win and an 11-4 loss on Saturday at Ben Hines Field.
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 26-5 overall and 14-4 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer 14, La Verne 3
The Sagehens were led by Isaac Kim and JC Ng who each went 3-5 in the win. Kim brought home four runners and scored two himself while Ng ended the game with three runs scored and two RBI's. Jake Hilton earned the start in game one of the doubleheader and turned out an incredible performance with seven scoreless innings only giving up three hits and six strikeouts for the win. Ben Cohen earned an inning of relief work as well as Eric Prough to finish out the game.
It took the Sagehens until the third inning to manufacture some runs but got to the La Verne starter second time around the order. Ng started the scoring with an RBI single to right field while Kim cleaned up with two more off of a single to left to put the Sagehens up 3-0.
Pomona-Pitzer tacked on to their total in the top of the fifth with five more. Kim added two more RBI's to his total with a single down the line while Ryan Nishi followed with a double to right field to bring home two more and Kevin Lo ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to put the Sagehens on top 8-0. The Sagehens were gifted one more run in the following inning after a bases loaded walk to Jackson Fleming bumped the lead to 9-0.
La Verne finally got on the board in game one in the bottom of the eighth off of an RBI single and a fielder's choice that led to an error to cut the lead to 9-2.
The Sagehens put a stamp on game one in the top of the ninth with an RBI single from Ng and a grand slam from Nate Jakobs to extend the lead to 14-2. The Leopards added one more in the bottom of the ninth, but the Sagehens ended game one with a dominating performance on the road.
Pomona-Pitzer 4, La Verne 11
The Sagehens were led by Kim who went 2-5 with a run scored.
La Verne jumped out to an early lead after they plated four runs in the bottom of the first off of four hits to start the game with a 4-0 lead. The Sagehens responded during their next at-bat after the Leopards gifted Pomona-Pitzer a run off of an error to cut the lead down to 4-1.
The Leopards responded with a big bottom of the second with two RBI doubles and a run off of a wild pitch to extend the lead to 7-1 and after a pitching change for the Sagehens, added two more on an RBI single to go up 9-1.
The Sagehens cut into the lead in the top of the third as Kevin Lo plated three runs with one swing after he blasted a three-run homer to right center to make it 9-4.
The scoring stopped for the Sagehens after the third as La Verne tacked on two more in the bottom of the seventh as they salvaged one game of the three-game series with the Sagehens taking the series win.
