Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team walked-off against the No. 4 La Verne Leopards 5-4 in 12 innings to start their SCIAC three-game series on Friday night at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 25-4 overall and 13-3 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by David Bedrosian who went 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's and tallied three walks, two of them intentionally. Kevin Lo went 3-5 with an RBI, while JC Ng, Isaac Kim, Nate Jakobs, and Caleb Millikan registered two hits each in the win. Harry Deliyannis got the start in game one of the series and got a no-decision after six innings with three runs scored and five strikeouts. Eric Prough was first out of the pen and went two scoreless innings while Joe Williams picked up the win with four innings of shutout baseball, three of them in extra innings, and six strikeouts in the win.
La Verne jumped ahead in the top of the first after a walk with two outs in the inning led to a two-run homer by the Leopards four batter to get out to a 2-0 advantage.
The Sagehens had runners on in each of the first three innings but failed to get a run across against the Leopards while La Verne went on to add another run in the top of the fourth from an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
Pomona-Pitzer cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth and a single by Jimmy Legg set the stage for a two-run bomb by Bedrosian to cut the lead down to one run at 3-2.
The Sagehens came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth after Jackson Fleming drove in Ryan Nishi with an RBI triple but was thrown out at the plate trying to leg out an inside the park homer to keep the game even at 3-3.
La Verne went on to reclaim the lead in the top of the eighth after an error by the Sagehen defense gave the Leopards the go-ahead run at 4-3, but the Sagehens came back in the bottom of the eighth with the game-tying RBI single up the middle by Lo to make it 4-4 heading into the ninth.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, the Sagehens had a chance to walk-off with one out in the inning, but the Leopards turned a game saving double play to send the game into extra innings. The Leopards wouldn't survive the Sagehens' second bases loaded opportunity as Jakobs brought home Ng on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th as the Sagehens stormed the field for their walk-off victory over La Verne in a battle for first place in the SCIAC.
