Sagehens Take SCIAC Series Against Cal Lutheran With Doubleheader Split

THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team won the three-game series with a doubleheader split against Cal Lutheran with a 15-2 loss and. 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon at Ullman Stadium.

Season Impact: with the split, the Sagehens move to 21-4 overall and 9-3 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer 2, Cal Lutheran 15

The Sagehens were led by Jimmy Legg and Kevin Lo who each tallied a hit in the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer got into trouble early on in game one against the Kingsmen after loading the bases in the first inning.  The Kingsmen took advantage and put six runs on the board off of four hits, two errors and three walks to take a 6-0 lead over the Sagehens.  Cal Lutheran added one more in the bottom of the second off of an RBI single to increase the lead to 7-1 after two innings of play.

After no damage done in the third, Cal Lutheran came back in the fourth and added five more to take a commanding 12-0 lead. The Sagehens got their first run of the game after an RBI single by Legg but still trailed the Kingsmen 12-1.

Cal Lutheran responded with two more in the bottom half of the inning while the Sagehens got their second run of the game in the top of the sixth off of a defensive miscue to make it 14-2. The Kingsmen added one more run in the bottom of the sixth as the Sagehens fell in game one of the doubleheader via the run rule.

Pomona-Pitzer 3, Cal Lutheran 1

The Sagehens were led by Nate Jakobs who went 2-4 with two RBI's in the win. Jake Hilton got the start and improved to 4-0 on the year with six innings of shutout work with six strikeouts and only two hits surrendered. Joe Williams came on in relief and picked up the save with three innings of work.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to a lead to start game two of the doubleheader after RBI's in the first from Isaac Kim and Nate Jakobs put the Sagehens on top 2-0 early. The Sagehen defense along with Hilton shut down the Kingsmen for the first six innings of the game while the Sagehens added one more in the top of the seventh off of grounder by Jakobs to take a 3-0 lead.

Williams came on in the seventh for the Sagehens and only gave up one run in the eighth off of an error as he was able to preserve the lead and hang on for the series winning save.

Up Next: The Sagehens will travel to SCIAC opponent Whittier on Friday, April 8th at 3:00 p.m.
