CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team defeated No. 3 CMS 7-2 on Saturday night at the Biszantz Family Center to secure the Regular Season SCIAC Championship.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens clinch the regular season title and home court advantage in the SCIAC Tournament. The Sagehens improve to 17-1 overall and 5-0 in SCIAC play. This win marks the first win inside conference play over the Athenas since 2016 and the first win for the Sagehens at Biszantz since 2010.
The Sagehens thrived during the doubles competition as they took all three matches to set themselves up for a promising finish. Georgia Ryan and Janie Marcus got the Sagehens a win at No. 3 doubles with an 8-4 victory and the No. 1 doubles team of Nina Ye and Maria Lyven as well as the No. 2 team of Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou followed up with wins of 8-5 to take a 3-0 lead into singles.
The singles got off to a good start for the Sagehens as Ye got the lead to 4-0 after a quick 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles before CMS earned their first win of the day at No. 6 singles to make it 4-1.
CMS got the match to 4-2 after a win at No. 4 singles, but the clinch for the Sagehens came at the No. 1 spot as Lyven battled for three sets and came away with the 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win.
The Sagehens followed up with two more wins on the day as Zhou won at No. 2 singles 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 and Marcus won her singles at the No. 5 spot, 7-6, 6-7, 10-4.
