NICHOLASVILLE, KY. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team claimed third place at the ITA Indoor National Championships with a 5-1 win over SCIAC rival CMS on Sunday morning at Centre College.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens finish with a third-place finish at ITA Indoor National Championships and move to 5-1 overall on the year.
The Sagehens took two of the three doubles against CMS as Angie Zhou and Marissa Markey started things out with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles followed by Maria Lyven and Nina Ye getting a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-5. The only loss of the day for the Sagehens came at No. 3 doubles with Janie Marcus and Georgia Ryan coming up just short of the sweep with an 8-4 loss.
After taking a 2-1 lead into singles, the Sagehens wasted no time putting away the Athenas. Ryan and Zhou made quick work of their opponents as Zhou went on to win 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Ryan earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 to pull within one match of securing the win.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to seal the win with Lyven at No. 1 after she held on to win 6-4 in the first set and swept her opponent in the second set 6-0 to give the Sagehens a big win over their SCIAC rivals.
