Nicholasville, KY -- The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team fell to Chicago 5-4 in the Semifinals of the ITA Indoor National Championship on Saturday morning at Top Seed Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 4-1 overall.
The Sagehens fell behind after doubles as they dropped two of the three doubles matches to the Maroons. The Sagehens got their only win of doubles at the No. 2 position as Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou won 8-4. The Sagehens lost at No.1 doubles as Maria Lyven and Nina Ye fell 8-4 and Janie Marcus and Georgia Ryan fell in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-5).
After going down 2-1 after doubles, the Sagehens needed to win four singles to advance to the Championships. Ye took care of her opponent at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win and Ryan had a battle for two sets at No. 6 but ended winning both 6-4, 7-5. The Sagehens also won a tight contest at No. 3 singles with Angie Zhou winning a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) and held on to win 7-5 in set two.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to lose matches at No. 5 and No. 4 as they needed a win at No. 1 to advance. Lyven was the only match to reach a third set as she fell in a tough first set 7-6 (10-8) but came back to win set two 6-4 to set up a third which she fell 6-0 as Chicago held on for the close win.
