CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team edged out a 5-4 win over No. 10 Middlebury on Wednesday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Courts.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens have earned their seventh-straight win and move to 11-1 overall.
The Sagehens started with two wins at doubles with victories at one and two doubles. Nina Ye and Maria Lyven started out with a big 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and the team of Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou held off their opponents at No. 2 doubles for an 8-6 win.
After taking. 2-1 lead into singles, the Sagehens needed just three wins to clinch the match against the Panthers. The Sagehens earned two wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Zhou won in two sets at No. 3 singles by the scores of 6-4, 6-0 while Georgia Ryan also won in two sets at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Pomona-Pitzer fell at singles, one, two and five that set up a clinching match at No. 4 singles between Markey and Gena Huang. Markey went on to drop the first set 6-4 needing to win the final two sets to clinch a Sagehen win. Markey dominated the second set 6-0 and clinched the win for the Sagehens with a 6-3 win in set three to seal the 5-4 win.
